In October 2017, Islamic Relief Bosnia-Herzegovina commemorated its 25th anniversary, and IRUSA had the honor of being there to celebrate. Bosnia is a country that has lived through the horrors of war, catastrophic flooding, and severe underdevelopment. It is also a country of remarkable resilience, and it has a special place in the history of IRUSA. In fact, it’s where it all started. Anwar Khann, President of Islamic Relief USA, first visited Bosnia during the worst of the Bosnian war, and it was there that he was inspired to help form Islamic Relief USA in 1993. IRUSA’s first project was fundraising to help those suffering in Bosnia. 25 years later, Anwar Khan returned to Bosnia for an emotional trip down memory lane. He recalled his first visit, wearing a bullet proof vest and witnessing the immense need of the Bosnian people over 20 years ago.
